How to make Irish Stew

Traditional Irish Stew Ingredients

With St. Paddy's day not far away I thought Id put this up for you to try. Then come March 17th you will be an expert!!!!

2 large onions
4 large Carrots
½ stewing steak or lamb or Pork
8 large potatoes
Salt & pepper

Wash and cut onions into moderate size chunks and add to the pot.
Also wash carrots and cut into chunks, some prefer thicker chucks for taste.

Wash and peel the potatoes (spuds), cut each one in half.
Slice the meat into smaller pieces and if using stewing mince roll into meatballs.

Get a large pot full of water and stock, add the potatoes and meat.
Bring to boil then start adding the carrots and onions, keep on a low boil.

Cooking time for the Irish stew should be approximately 60 minutes or when the meat is fully cooked and the potatoes are soft inside (use a fork)

Add salt & pepper according to taste.

Once the stew is cooked, serve in bowls and provide fresh slices of bread & butter.
The above meal does not sound exciting but it is a traditional way of making Irish stew which has been a common meal in Ireland for hundreds of years.
You can experiment with Stew by adding different ingredients to give more taste and to make it more like a stew and not a soup.

More ingredients you should test with in a pot of Irish stew are:
Mushrooms
Parsley
Herbs
Beef gravy granules
Oxtail powered soup preferable an Irish brand like Knorr.
Table Sauce (Brown)
Ketchup
Curry powder (no this is not a typo).

Try making stew testing with one of the above ingredients each time you make this lovely meal. One personal favorite of ours is adding curry powder to the boiling pot of Stew, with a small amount it can taste great.
